SYNOPSIS: (According to my husband, who has NOT read the book —  see how well he listens to my bookish ramblings)

All the gods are dying and they have to fight each other to survive.  Of particular note is a goddess with feather’s growing inside her body.  Sounds like a cool take on greek mythology.

BOOK ROCK BETTY BREAK DOWN:

  • THE KISSING Aidan and Cassandra shared a few kisses, BUT… what I really loved  was the hardcore tension going on between Athena and Odysseus!  I’m telling you…. these two are HOT!  Next book– it is on!
  • THE SWOONING -  Aidan is the first guy I was introduced to in this book.  He is obviously attractive, sweet, loyal, everything a girl could want in a guy, but of course he has his secrets!  I adored how much he loved Cassandra.  No matter what, protecting her is all that matters.  The other guy I met was Odysseus.  He is freaking sexy!!  He was introduced into the story with his shirt off.  Again, another guy that is loyal and insanely in love.  He has had his fair share of women, but no one like Athena.  He can’t have her, but he just might get her!  Basically, I want to make out with him.
  • THE SWAGGER –  There is a lot going on in this book.  The story is told in third person and focuses on two different sets of characters until the story eventually collides.  There is a lot of world building that takes place, which can get frustrating at times, but is necessary to see the full picture.  It didn’t click for me right away, but once it did I was glued to it!  As the story progresses it is intense and loaded with action– I’m talking Gods and Goddesses fighting to the death!  They are dying and all that matters is survival, no matter who has to die!  As always, Kendare Blake sprinkles in the perfect amount of humor without it feeling forced!
  • THE OH SNAP! 1.  Athena is a badass, ruthless Goddess.  2.  Gods/Goddesses are dying.  3.  Reincarnation  4. Cassandra is psychic.  5.  Hera is scary.  6.  Poseidon is really scary too.  7.  A major character DIES!  (My heart is broken)
  • THE UMMMM WHAT?? Cassandra bought into the whole “God” thing pretty quickly.  I think she would have freaked out and rejected the entire concept more than she did!
  • THE ROCK:  You’re Going Down by Sick Puppies   spot

ENCORE:
I really enjoyed this book!  It felt fresh and original.  I love books that are so incredibly unique and interesting that I don’t miss a central focus on romance!  Kendare Blake knows how to write an intense book.  I never get bored and am always stuck biting my fingernails as I wait to see how the story will play out.  She is not afraid to kill her characters.  This is scary for a reader, but I appreciate knowing that ANYTHING COULD HAPPEN!  She has a way of making every character important.  I felt connected and had a good feel for who each character really was.  I look forward to the rest of the series and can’t wait to see what she has in store for these characters next!

The only issue I had with the book is that I don’t feel everything was explained as well as I would have liked.  This may be because I’m not extremely well versed in Greek mythology, but regardless, I didn’t feel like I completely understood what was going on.  I have a lot of questions about why the Gods are dying and why killing each other might save them.  Overall, a strong start to a new series!!
